What is your approach?
My work is grounded in anti-oppressive practice, cultural attunement and relational ways of working.
I am interested in how identity, culture, faith, neurodivergence, power and lived experience shape the way we understand ourselves and relate to others.
Whether I am working therapeutically, providing supervision, delivering training or offering Colour & Identity colour analysis consultations, my aim is to create reflective, culturally and faith-sensitive, supportive spaces that honour the complexity of human experience.
What is anti-oppressive practice?
Anti-oppressive practice is an approach that recognises the impact of power, privilege, discrimination and systemic inequalities on people's lives and wellbeing.
Rather than viewing difficulties solely as individual problems, anti-oppressive practice encourages us to consider the wider social, cultural and relational contexts in which people live.
It involves ongoing reflection, curiosity and accountability, helping us to work more ethically and responsively with identities, diversity and lived experience.
This approach sits at the heart of my therapeutic, supervisory, training, well-being and consultancy work and forms the basis of the model presented in my book Working Within Diversity.
What does culturally attuned practice mean?
Culturally attuned practice involves recognising that every person brings their own identities, experiences, values, beliefs and worldview into a relationship.
Rather than making assumptions, cultural attunement encourages and invites cultural empathy, cultural curiosity, and cultural humility into the relationship, to support my openness and responsiveness to the person's unique experience.
It means understanding that culture is not an optional extra within wellbeing and therapy - it is part of how we make sense of ourselves and the world around us.
Why does identity matter in wellbeing?
Identity influences how we experience ourselves, our relationships and our sense of belonging.
Our culture, faith, ethnicity, gender, neurodivergence, sexuality, family experiences and values can all shape wellbeing.
When important parts of our identity feel unseen, misunderstood or difficult to express, wellbeing can be affected.
Conversely, when we feel able to understand and express ourselves more authentically, wellbeing often improves.
This understanding informs all areas of my work, from counselling and supervision to training, writing and Colour & Identity colour analysis consultations.
Do you work with clients from diverse backgrounds?
Yes.
Throughout my career I have worked with individuals from a wide range of cultural, ethnic, religious, faith, racial and social backgrounds.
I have a particular interest in supporting people to explore identity, diversity, belonging and lived experience within reflective, anti-oppressive spaces.
Do you work with faith and spirituality?
Yes.
Faith and spirituality can be important aspects of identity and wellbeing for many people.
I work with individuals from a range of faith backgrounds, as well as those who do not identify with a faith tradition.
As a qualified Islamic Counsellor and founder of the Muslim Counsellor and Psychotherapist Network (MCAPN), I also have particular experience working alongside and supporting Muslim clients, practitioners and organisations.
Do you work with neurodivergent clients and practitioners?
Yes.
I work with neurodivergent clients and practitioners, including those who identify as ADHD, autistic or being neurodivergent.
As someone who is ADHD myself, I understand both professionally and personally some of the ways neurodivergence can influence wellbeing, relationships, learning, creativity and self-expression.
My approach is affirming, reflective and responsive to individual experiences rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all perspective.
Do you offer anti-oppressive practice training?
Yes.
I provide workshops, CPD training, keynote presentations and consultancy for therapists, supervisors, coaches, educators, organisations and professional communities.
Topics include anti-oppressive practice, cultural attunement, supervision, identity, wellbeing, self-expression, faith-sensitive practice and working within diversity.
Training can be delivered online or in person.
Can you speak at conferences and events?
Yes.
I regularly deliver keynote presentations, workshops, panel discussions and conference sessions nationally and internationally.
My speaking topics include anti-oppressive practice, identity, cultural attunement, wellbeing, supervision, diversity, faith-sensitive practice, neurodiversity and self-expression.
Please get in touch to discuss your event requirements.
What books have you written?
I am the author of two books:
Working Within Diversity explores anti-oppressive practice in counselling, psychotherapy and supervision and introduces a practical framework for working within diversity, to offer anti-oppressive practice.
The Muslim Guide to Wellbeing explores wellbeing through the lenses of identity, faith, self-care and belonging, offering an anti-oppressive approach to understanding wellbeing.
Both books are used by practitioners, students and individuals interested in identity, wellbeing and professional development.
What is a Colour & Identity Colour Analysis Consultation?
A Colour & Identity Consultation combines professional colour analysis with a deeper exploration of confidence, identity and self-expression.
Whilst colour analysis helps identify the colours that naturally harmonise with your features, my approach goes beyond appearance alone.
Together, we explore how colour can support confidence, authenticity and the way you wish to express yourself in the world.
This work is grounded in my wider interest in identity, wellbeing and self-expression.
How does colour relate to identity and well-being?
Colour is often viewed as something purely aesthetic, but it can also be a powerful form of self-expression.
The colours we wear can influence how we feel, how we present ourselves and how confidently we express our identity.
Whilst colour alone does not determine wellbeing, feeling more aligned with how we see ourselves can positively influence confidence, authenticity and self-expression.
For many people, colour becomes another way of exploring the question:
"How do I become more fully myself?"
