What Are the Connections Between Colour, Identity and Wellbeing?
It's not really about colour—it's about feeling more like yourself.

At first glance, colour analysis and wellbeing may seem like entirely different things.
One is often associated with clothing, style and appearance.
The other with mental health, self-care and emotional wellbeing.
Yet the more I have worked with people through therapy, supervision, writing and, more recently, Colour & Identity Colour Analysis Consultancy, the more I have come to see the powerful connection between them.
Because colour is rarely just about colour.
It is often about identity.
And identity has a profound impact on wellbeing.
More Than What We Wear
Most of us make choices about colour every day.
The clothes we wear.
The hijabs we choose.
The colours we decorate our homes with.
The colours we are drawn towards.
The colours we avoid.
We often think these choices are purely practical or aesthetic.
But they can also reflect something deeper about how we see ourselves and how we want to be seen.
Colour can communicate confidence, creativity, professionalism, individuality, calmness, energy or belonging.
In many ways, colour becomes another language through which we express who we are.
Identity and Wellbeing Are Closely Connected
Throughout my work as a therapist, I have seen how strongly wellbeing is influenced by identity.
When we feel disconnected from who we are, wellbeing often suffers.
When we feel unable to express ourselves authentically, wellbeing can suffer.
When we feel unseen, misunderstood or unable to bring important parts of ourselves into the world, wellbeing can suffer.
Conversely, when we feel more aligned with our values, identity and sense of self, we often experience greater confidence, self-acceptance and emotional wellbeing.
This is why identity matters.
And this is where colour enters the conversation.
What Happens When We Feel Like Ourselves?
Have you ever put on an outfit and thought:
"This feels like me".
Not because it was fashionable.
Not because someone else approved of it.
But because it felt authentic.
Comfortable.
Natural.
Many people describe a noticeable shift when they wear colours that harmonise with their natural colouring and personal style.
They often feel:
- More confident
- More comfortable
- More visible
- More authentic
- More connected to themselves
These experiences are not simply about appearance.
They are about alignment.
The feeling that how we present ourselves externally reflects something of who we are internally.
The Role of Self-Expression
Self-expression is often overlooked when we talk about wellbeing.
Yet it plays a significant role in how we experience ourselves and the world around us.
We express ourselves through:
- Language
- Relationships
- Creativity
- Faith
- Culture
- Values
- Clothing
- Colour
When we feel free to express ourselves authentically, we often experience greater confidence and ease.
When we feel restricted, judged or disconnected from our identity, that freedom can diminish.
Colour analysis can become one small but meaningful way of exploring self-expression.
Not by telling people who they should be.
But by helping them discover what already feels true for them.
Why Colour Analysis Isn't About Following Rules
One of the biggest misconceptions about colour analysis is that it is about strict rules.
"Can I wear black?"
"Am I allowed to wear this colour?"
"What if I don't like my palette?"
For me, colour analysis is not about restriction.
It is about understanding.
Understanding your natural colouring.
Understanding what enhances your features.
Understanding how colour influences how you feel.
And understanding how you want to express yourself.
Your colour palette should support your identity, not replace it.
Colour, Confidence and Belonging
Many clients come to colour analysis wanting practical guidance.
They want help choosing clothes, hijabs, makeup or accessories.
What often surprises them is how much confidence they gain from understanding their colours.
Not because they suddenly become different people.
But because they spend less time second-guessing themselves.
Less time wondering if something works.
Less time buying clothes they never wear.
More time feeling comfortable and confident in their choices.
There is something powerful about knowing what works for you.
For Muslim Women, Colour Can Be Part of Identity
As a visibly Muslim woman, I am particularly interested in how colour intersects with faith, culture and identity.
For many Muslim women, the hijab is one of the most visible forms of self-expression.
Yet many women tell me they wear the same colours repeatedly because they feel safe, practical or familiar.
Colour analysis can help expand those possibilities.
Not by changing someone's identity.
But by helping them discover colours that complement their natural features while remaining authentic to their personal style, values and expression.
Why I Created Colour & Identity Consultations
My interest in colour analysis did not emerge from fashion.
It emerged from years of working with identity.
As a therapist, supervisor and author, I have spent much of my career exploring questions such as:
- Who am I?
- How do I understand myself?
- How do I express who I am?
- What helps me feel most like myself?
These same questions continue to guide my Colour & Identity Colour Analysis Consultancy.
Because for me, colour analysis is not simply about finding your 'colours'.
It is about exploring confidence, authenticity and self-expression.
It is about helping people feel more aligned with who they are.
Colour as a Tool for Self-Understanding
Colour analysis will not solve every problem.
It will not transform your life overnight.
But it can offer something surprisingly valuable:
A greater understanding of yourself.
A clearer sense of what feels authentic.
A more intentional approach to self-expression.
And perhaps a little more confidence in showing up as yourself.
Curious About Your Colours?
If you've ever wondered:
- Why some colours make you feel more confident
- Which hijab colours suit you best
- How colour influences self-expression
- Whether colour analysis could help you feel more like yourself
I'd love to help.
My Colour & Identity Consultations combine professional colour analysis with a deeper exploration of confidence, identity and self-expression, helping you discover not only what colours suit you, but how colour can support the way you want to show up in the world.
