Why Identity Matters in Wellbeing

Myira Khan • 28 July 2026

Because well-being isn't just about what we do . . . it's also about who we are.

When we think about wellbeing, we often think about what we should be doing.

Getting more sleep.

Setting better boundaries.

Practising self-care.

Taking time off.

Whilst these things matter, I believe there is a deeper question that wellbeing invites us to explore:

Who am I?

Because wellbeing isn't only about how we care for ourselves.

It's also about how we understand ourselves.

Identity Shapes Wellbeing

Our identities influence how we move through the world.

Our culture.

Our faith.

Our gender.

Our neurodivergence.

Our family roles.

Our values.

Our experiences of belonging.

These parts of ourselves shape how we experience relationships, confidence, connection and wellbeing.

When important aspects of our identity feel unseen, misunderstood or hidden, wellbeing can suffer.

When we feel able to bring more of ourselves into the world, wellbeing often grows.

The Importance of Self-Expression

One thing I've noticed throughout my work as a therapist, supervisor and author is that many people struggle not because they don't know who they are, but because they don't feel able to express who they are.

Sometimes we learn to fit in.

To adapt.

To minimise aspects of ourselves.

To prioritise acceptance over authenticity.

Over time, this can create a gap between our inner experience and our outer expression.

And that gap can affect confidence, wellbeing and our sense of self.

Why Colour Became Part of My Work

People are sometimes surprised when they discover that alongside my work as a therapist, supervisor and author, I also offer Colour & Identity - Colour Analysis Consultations.

For me, however, the connection feels completely natural.

Because colour analysis isn't simply about clothing.

Or fashion.

Or appearance.

It's about self-expression.

It's about understanding how we want to show up in the world.

It's about exploring confidence, authenticity and identity.

Colour can become another language through which we communicate who we are.

Identity Is Lived, Not Just Understood

Understanding ourselves is important.

But wellbeing is not only about insight.

It's also about expression.

How we speak.

How we create.

How we connect.

How we dress.

How we present ourselves.

How we honour the identities that make us who we are.

Whether through therapy, supervision, writing, training or colour analysis, I find myself returning to the same question again and again:

How can we become more fully ourselves?

Identity as a Wellbeing Practice

Perhaps wellbeing is not simply about doing more.

Perhaps it is also about understanding ourselves more deeply.

Exploring what matters to us.

Recognising the identities that shape us.

Finding ways to express ourselves authentically.

And creating lives that feel aligned with who we are.

Because when we feel more connected to ourselves, we often feel more connected to our wellbeing too.

And that is why identity matters.
